DTF Pressing Instructions

Apply Your DTF Transfers With Confidence

Follow these instructions to achieve a smooth finish, strong adhesion, and long-lasting wash durability. Heat presses can vary, so these settings should be treated as a recommended starting point. Always follow any order-specific instructions provided by DB Graphics A2.

Recommended Press Settings

Important: Test one transfer before beginning a large production run. Some garments require lower temperatures or shorter pressing times.

Step-by-Step Pressing Instructions

1. Prepare the Garment

Place the garment flat on the heat press. Make sure the application area is clean, dry, and free of wrinkles, lint, seams, buttons, and zippers.

2. Pre-Press

Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds. This removes moisture and wrinkles while creating a smooth surface for the transfer.

3. Position the Transfer

Place the DTF transfer on the garment with the printed design facing down and the film facing up.

Confirm that the design is straight, centered, and positioned correctly before pressing. Use heat-resistant tape when needed to prevent movement.

4. Apply Heat and Pressure

Press at 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds using medium-to-firm pressure.

The heat press should close evenly across the entire design. Uneven or insufficient pressure can prevent parts of the transfer from adhering properly.

5. Peel the Film

Allow the transfer to cool according to its peel type.

  • For a warm-peel transfer, wait a few seconds before peeling.
  • For a cold-peel transfer, allow it to cool completely.

Peel the film slowly and smoothly from one corner. Do not force the film if the design has not fully adhered.

6. Repress the Design

Cover the transferred design with parchment paper, a finishing sheet, or another approved protective sheet.

Press again for 5–10 seconds. This final press improves adhesion, durability, and the overall finish.

If the Transfer Does Not Fully Adhere

Place the film back over the design and press again for an additional 5–10 seconds using slightly more pressure.

Common causes of poor adhesion include:

  • Insufficient pressure
  • Low press temperature
  • Uneven heat
  • Moisture in the garment
  • Pressing over seams or raised areas
  • Peeling before the transfer is ready

Fabric Considerations

Different garments react differently to heat. Before production, check the garment manufacturer’s heat tolerance and care instructions.

  • Cotton: Usually works well with the standard settings.
  • Cotton/polyester blends: Use standard settings but watch for dye migration.
  • Polyester and performance fabrics: May require lower heat and shorter pressing times.
  • Nylon or coated materials: Must be tested before application.
  • Heat-sensitive garments: Use caution and perform a test press first.

DB Graphics A2 is not responsible for damage caused by pressing garments at temperatures above the manufacturer’s recommended limit.

Household Irons Are Not Recommended

For the best results, use a commercial heat press that provides consistent temperature and pressure. Household irons do not usually provide even heat or enough pressure for dependable DTF application.

DTF Transfer Care Instructions

For the best wash durability:

  • Wait at least 24 hours before washing.
  • Turn the garment inside out.
  • Machine wash in cold water.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
  • Tumble dry on low or hang dry.
  • Do not iron directly over the design.
  • Do not dry clean.
